UofG Student Support Policies
The unviersity supports students in a number of ways. A range of support is available for students from widening participation backgrounds.
See the UofG Widening Participation page for inofrmation about how the Universtiy can support you in these situations.
Expecting a Baby
If you are pregnant, or the partner of someone who is pregnant, or in the process of adopting a child, the University recognises that you may require some time off and some special arrangements so you don’t lose track of your studies.
The SRC has helped the University put together a Student Maternity, Maternity Support and Adoption Policy that gives guidance to students and staff on what to do and what to expect in these situations.
The policy is for:
- any student who becomes pregnant during her studies;
- prospective students who are already pregnant when they commence study;
- any student who has given birth within the previous 26 weeks;
- any student who is about to become a parent because their partner (including same sex partner) is pregnant, and who expects to be responsible for the child;
- any student who has recently become a parent e.g. through adoption.
The policy focuses primarily on study-related matters, including:
- how and when to notify your School and Adviser of Studies/Postgraduate Supervisor;
- rights and responsibilities for students, staff and the University;
- health and safety issues;
- absence from and resumption of studies;
- financial considerations.
It also provides links to relevant sources of information and help.
If you have any queries about this policy, contact your Adviser of Studies (or Advising Team, or Supervisor), or the SRC Advice Centre.
Caring responsibilities
If you provide emotional or practical support to a friend, relative or neighbour who is unable to manage alone, and you think this might have an impact on your studies, then the University recognises that some special arrangements may need to be made. The University’s Student Carers’ Policy came into operation in 2011-12. This policy was developed in conjunction with the SRC and gives guidance to students and staff on what to do and what to expect in these circumstances.
This Policy provides advice and guidance regarding:
- Confirming Carer Status
- Contacting the Adviser of Studies or Supervisor
- Contacting the School
- Implications for Study
- Withdrawal from or Suspension of Studies
- Resuming Studies
- Financial Considerations
- Accommodation
Student Carers who wish to request special arrangements to support them in their studies should complete the Student Carer’s Plan form.
If you have any queries about this policy, contact your Adviser of Studies (or Advising Team, or Supervisor), or the SRC Advice Centre.
Parental responsibilities
If you have responsibility for children under 18, the University can provide support to help you combine those responsibilities with your studies. The University’s Student Parents Policy came into force in 2018-19. As with the other policies mentioned above, it was developed in conjunction with the SRC and gives guidance for staff and students.
The policy covers:
- Your responsibility as a parent - who you should speak to, and what information you need;
- Adviser of studies, adivising team or supervisor responsibility - what to do if your academic work is affected;
- School and University responsibility - what the university must do under the terms of the policy;
- Implication for study and academic standards;
If you have any queries about this policy, contact your Adviser of Studies (or Advising Team, or Supervisor), or the SRC Advice Centre
