Join the Ukrainian Society to commemorate Unity Day on 22nd January. We will be creating a Unity Chain, which is a symbolic tradition where participants join hands to form a human chain, representing the unity of Ukrainians worldwide. This event is deeply tied to День Соборності (Unity Day), an important day in Ukrainian history.
Unity Day, celebrated on January 22, marks two pivotal milestones:
- The proclamation of the Ukrainian People’s Republic in 1918, establishing the first modern democratic state governed by Ukrainians.
- The unification of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic in 1919, creating the first united Ukrainian state (albeit briefly), encompassing all territories populated by Ukrainians.
These events are foundational to Ukrainian statehood, symbolizing the ongoing aspirations for independence and unity. Today, as Ukraine continues its fight for independence and sovereignty, the principle of unity remains a key national priority.
Students, staff and the community will be welcome to join us at the Cloisters of the Main Building and the event will last approximately one hour and will include the following:
- Speeches
- Formation of the Unity Chain
- Singing Together
- Group Photo
