Skill Requirement for participants:
GU Jazz Society masterclasses are open to all, but as a means of ensuring that they are productive for all attendees we must ask that all participants be of an intermediate standard as musicians and improvisers. For more beginner-oriented workshops, we recommend attending our Jazz Workshops! They are intended to give all skill levels a space to improve and receive tips from more experienced players.
In the face of uncertainty as to one’s skill level, GU Jazz Society defines an intermediate skill level as the following:
• Fluency to improvise on a variety of “Standards” and a knowledge of typical jazz repertoire.
• Understanding of typical jazz etiquette and tropes of the genre.
• Fundamentals of reading notation and chord symbols
Helena Kay:
Award-winning tenor saxophonist Helena Kay is quickly becoming renowned as one of the UK’s most creative and virtuosic jazz artists, with two critically acclaimed albums, four UK tours and performances at the UK’s most esteemed jazz venues such as Ronnie Scott’s, The Royal Albert Hall and The Vortex.
Their latest album, Golden Sands (2022), was released on Kay’s own label, Sulis Records, in October 2022. The album received high praise from the jazz media, showcasing original compositions that are reflective of Kay’s experiences in their homeland of Scotland, and their time spent living in London and New York City.
All attendees must follow the GUSRC Events Code of Conduct: https://www.glasgowunisrc.org/policies/events-conduct/
