About

Glasgow University Men's Basketball Club (GUMBC) is a fun and all-inclusive club!

Glasgow University Men's Basketball Club (GUMBC) provides an opportunity for people of all backgrounds and skill to compete, improve their fitness and meet new friends in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Teams

The First Team compete in BUCS 1, which involves playing competitively against other universities across Scotland. They train twice a week, on Monday mornings and Thursday evenings. Training provides an environment for more experienced players to compete, improve their basketball skills and fitness. Games are played on Wednesdays.

The Second Team compete in BUCS 2 and SLBA 2. The team trains twice a week, on Monday evenings and Friday mornings. Their games are played on Wednesdays and weekends.

The Third Team compete in BUCS 5 and SLBA 2. The team trains twice a week, on Monday evenings and Thursday mornings. Training with the third team often allows players to be promoted to higher teams in the future.

The Chinese International Team compete in SLBA 2 throughout the year. They won the British Chinese Basketball League and brought home the Birmingham Cup last year! The team trains twice weekly in the Stevenson building, including on Tuesday afternoons.

All of our competitive teams have access to the excellent Strength & Conditioning facilities at the Stevenson building.

The Recreational Team is open to all abilities, including those with little or no prior basketball experience. Sessions take place on Friday evenings in the Stevenson Building, allowing players to develop their fundamental skills and fitness. The sessions also provide a fantastic opportunity to socialise with new people and join the GUMBC community. Please ask to join the WhatsApp chat once you attend your first session to keep up to date with the sessions!

Other ways to get involved

The club offers both table officiating and refereeing opportunities, which are great ways to learn more about the sport and meet new people.

Since 2018 the club has been involved with the Rising Stars, a Charity founded by a founding member. This is a Social Outreach basketball programme with the Glasgow University Men & Women's basketball teams organising weekly basketball sessions for primary schools in Govan. There is also an opportunity to volunteer in these local schools to provide coaching sessions – https://risingstarsbasketball.co.uk/

You are also welcome along to our game days and show support to our teams! All the information on our home games at the Stevenson Building can be found on our Instagram page.

Socials

GUMBC hosts socials every Wednesday in conjunction with our friends at the Women’s Basketball Club. They are a great opportunity to meet new people and to get to know your teammates. As well as our regular socials, we hold bigger events. These range from Subcrawls, Ceilidhs, 3v3 tournaments and many more! Every year we host an Alumni Weekend, inviting previous players for a few days of fun and an evening of food.

Training

Our first, second and third team train twice per week, with games on Wednesdays and at weekends, while our International Team train once per week, with games at the weekends.

Insurance

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have appropriate insurance cover for any activity you take part in.  After joining, please check with us what insurance cover we provide to you.  GUSA recommends that all students playing high risk sport, go abroad to compete/train, or are playing in governing body leagues, may want to consider/need to take out personal liability insurance, or join the sports governing body to be covered.  Some insurance providers also offer specialist sports cover.

Basketball Bursaries

Launched in 2016, the University of Glasgow Bursaries for Basketball aim to promote excellence within the Men's and Women's University Basketball Clubs, to attract the best talent and support athletes in their quest to compete in basketball at the very highest level. As well as financial support, successful applicants will benefit from free access to the University of Glasgow’s sports facilities, strength & conditioning and nutritional support, sports mentoring advice, and assistance with negotiating academic flexibility.
