Handball is a sport in which two teams of seven players pass or dribble the ball, with the aim of throwing the ball into the opposition team’s goal.
Glasgow University Handball Club are an inclusive team, open to anyone and everyone. We’re also a team of mixed abilities, and welcome total newcomers, those who play frequently, and those looking to get back into handball after some time away from playing.
There are no try outs for the club, so you can come along even if you want to join recreationally to make friends and get fit.
Exchange and international students also often join, and have formed lasting friendships from their time with the club.
Training
Our training is as follows in the Stevenson Building Activity Hall (level 5):
Mondays 18:15 – 20:00
Fridays 15:00 – 17:00
Both teams train at the same time, so some sessions will involve training in your team, and some will be mixed gender to allow everyone to get to know each other.
Competition
We compete in the Scottish Student Handball league on Sundays. Both the women’s and men’s teams play consecutively on the same day, so the team not playing will be there to support the other during the match.
At the end of the season there is a final four tournament played to decide the Scottish champions, followed by BUCS finals (British university championship). Every season since 2018, the club has won medals in final four and/or BUCS.
Socials
Off court we have plenty of opportunities for socials. These include weekly socials, subcrawls, karaoke, pub golf, handball watch parties, etc. On top of this, members have organised hikes, open water swims, bike rides, and other activities with open invitations.
The club has often provided opportunities for close friendships to form. As we are a close knit team, outside of official socials, members enjoy just spending time with each other which adds to the relaxed environment of the club.
Recreational Sessions
Whilst we don’t have frequent, dedicated recreational sessions, anyone and everyone is encouraged to come along to train recreationally.
Insurance
It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the appropriate insurance cover for any activity you take part in. Upon joining, please check the level of insurance cover we, as a club, provide to you.
GUSA recommends that all students playing high risk sport, go abroad to compete/train, or are playing in governing body leagues, may want to consider/need to take out personal liability insurance, or join the sports governing body to be covered. Some insurance providers also offer specialist sports cover.
