Competitive
We currently have three competitive teams competing twice a week. Our 1st XI is currently playing in the top BUCS league in Scotland and pushing for promotion to the Scottish Hockey premiership. This team is also lucky to have a qualified and experienced coach. Our 2nd XI is also a very competitive side competing in the BUCS Scottish Tier 2 league and Scottish Hockey's regional league 2. Our 3rd XI also plays twice a week in BUCS Scottish Tier 3 and the local West District League 1. We are proud to be the only university in Scotland offering indoor hockey with our indoor 1st team currently competing in National 3 and pushing for promotion back up to National 2 while our 2nd team are currently competing in the west district indoor league. The club also offers dedicated training to a selected group of performance athletes. This includes an additional pitch session led by our head coach and dedicated gym sessions led by a specialised strength and conditioning coach in our fully equipped sports and fitness facility. If you are aspiring to become a top athlete in Scotland, then the GUMHC is the place for you.
Whether you are an experienced hockey player, have played for just a few years, or even if you are a complete beginner, the GUMHC is a place for everyone.
Recreational
The club has recently formed a 4th XI; though this team are currently not competing, it gives those new to their hockey career a great place to start. Led by experienced student coaches from our performance setup, sessions are well structured and most importantly good fun. This is a great way to start hockey and get involved with the club.
Socials
Along with the diverse range of hockey offered at the club, we make sure we take the time to relax and socialise with friends off the pitch. From weekly socials after BUCS games to joint socials with the Women’s club, there are so many opportunities to meet new people and make friends for life. We have multiple organised socials throughout the year and a highlight of this is the annual Club Dinner, held at the end of the year. This recognises a year of hard work from all our members. Every year the Men’s and Women’s club also offer a hockey tour to a European City. In previous years we have visited Budapest, Prague and Barcelona. This is a great way to round off the year and have fun with all the new people that you meet over your time at university.
Welfare & Inclusivity
At GUMHC we continuously strive to create and maintain a wholly inclusive environment for all members. Therefore, we hope to ensure any barriers to participation – either real or perceived – are removed. This is of particular importance for groups currently underrepresented within our club and our sport.
As such, our current practices and future plans ensure we are welcoming to all. Throughout our club history we have undertaken various events to help a wide range of charitable causes. Some prime examples are our dedication to the Movember campaign for men's health and suicide prevention, Stonewall's Rainbow Lace movement for LGBTQ+ visibility within sport, and our annual Festive Foodbank Shop. The club prides itself on our commitment to these local and national charities, and we encourage members to support any opportunities for action.
Insurance
It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the appropriate insurance cover for any activity you take part in. Upon joining, please check the level of insurance cover we, as a club, provide to you.
GUSA recommends that all students playing high risk sport, go abroad to compete/train, or are playing in governing body leagues, may want to consider/need to take out personal liability insurance, or join the sports governing body to be covered. Some insurance providers also offer specialist sports cover.
