Founded in 1869, the Glasgow University Rugby Football Club (GURFC) is one of the university’s oldest student groups.
The Club is a founding member of the Scottish Rugby Union https://www.scottishrugby.org/ and has fielded thirteen full internationalists.
The Performance Squad gives rugby players at the University the opportunity to train and play to their full potential, whilst studying to gain a world class degree. Players in this squad will receive the following support: ·
The club currently has 3 University teams that compete on a Wednesday, along with a team that plays on a Saturday. The 1st XV currently compete in BUCS Scottish 1A , winning the league in 2022- 2023. The 1st XV also play in the annual Glasgow Varsity Match against The University of Strathclyde at Scotstoun. The 2nd XV currently compete in BUCS Scottish 2A and won the Scottish Conference Cup in the 22/23 season. The 3rd XV compete in BUCS 3A and won the league in 23/24. The Saturday team play in West Reserve League 2.
We have a new partnership Hillhead Jordanhill RFC which merges the non-BUCS players of the GURFC and Hillhead players and acts in place of the Hills 3XV team. This team operates on a Saturday and has taken the West Reserve League Division 2 by storm with many convincing victories. Although a more recreational and social team, they still play at a great standard and provide some of the most entertaining games. The fun doesn’t end on the pitch, as it has become a tradition to celebrate results afterwards with inspiration from GURFC socials to include boys who are not able to play on a Wednesday. The
4XV Colts perfectly embody the ethos of the GURFC and it has been the beginning of a successful partnership with Hillhead RFC.
We train at Garscube Sport Complex on Mondays and Fridays. We also have S&C sessions early on a Monday and Friday morning, before lectures start.
Whilst having a serious and professional outlook on the field, off the field we are widely known as one of the most sociable clubs at The University of Glasgow. We have many social events throughout the year including a rugby ball, a fresher’s tour, charity Ceilidh and a fantastic club dinner, to mention but a few. Week in week out, after matches on Wednesdays, you will also be able to find us in the Glasgow University Union, hopefully celebrating a victory! The club welcomes social members and it is great way of getting to know like-minded people as you embark on your university career. The club also has an active alumni community providing strong support for the club both on and off the pitch.
