Dear Students,

Recently, the University launched a consultation survey on its Socially Responsible Investment Policy, following ongoing discussions about divestment from the arms industry. This consultation comes after years of advocacy from the student body, trade unions, and movements, such as Glasgow Against Arms and Fossil Fuels (GAAF), amongst others. Now, the University seeks your input to guide its final decision on this crucial and pressing issue.

For over a decade, the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) has firmly maintained a pro-divestment stance. Our position reflects a commitment to ethical investment, social justice, and peace. We believe the University’s financial practices must align with the values we aim to uphold as a community. Involvement in the arms industry is in direct conflict with these principles, and we remain concerned about the prolonged delays to effectively and clearly committing to divestment.

However, it is important that every student shares their views and draws their own conclusions. While the SRC will continue to challenge the University and maintain a pro-divestment stance, we encourage you to express your own perspectives. Your voice matters, and it will help shape the University’s policies moving forward.

You can access the survey here and the University’s draft policy here. It’s vital that as many students as possible take part before Friday 1st November.

Although some aspects of the survey might be complex or unclear, it’s essential for all students to critically evaluate the questions and contribute their honest feedback, regardless of their stance on the issue. This is a moment to ensure that the University makes decisions based on the diverse views of our entire community.

The SRC will continue to represent the student voice in discussions with the University. We will remain a proponent of ethical investment, pushing for changes that reflect the values of our student body. But now, we ask that you make your own voice heard. Your opinion is valuable and will be essential in contributing to the University’s decision.

Yours,

Pablo, Heri, Iris and Angelica
