Students' Representative Council Strongly Condemns Glasgow University’s Decision to Continue Investments in the Arms Industry

The Students' Representative Council (SRC) expresses its profound disappointment and outrage at the University of Glasgow’s decision to not divest from the arms industry. This decision represents a stark disregard for ethical investment principles and undermines the University’s stated commitment to social responsibility and global justice.

The SRC believes that the university's financial practices should align with its values of peace, equity, and sustainability, and its continued investment in companies that profit from the production and sale of weapons is in direct contradiction to these values. The University's decision to prioritise financial gain over human rights and moral accountability is deeply troubling, particularly given the ongoing global suffering caused by conflict and militarisation.

This decision disregards the tireless efforts of students who have campaigned for divestment. The SRC stands in solidarity with these students and shares their frustration and anger. The SRC is extremely disappointed by senior management's position on this issue. The proposed Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) policy fails to reflect the demands consistently voiced by the student body. The University must listen to its students and cease to allow for direct and indirect investments in arms companies and the rest of the companies and activities on the SRI exclusion list.

Pablo Morán Ruiz, SRC President stated:

“The SRC urges the University to reverse this decision and commit to divesting from the arms industry immediately. We, the SRC, call on the University leadership to engage in meaningful dialogue with the student body to chart a more responsible path forward.

The SRC will continue to advocate for ethical investment policies and take action to hold the University accountable. We stand united with students, staff, and community members who believe that universities should be leaders in advancing peace and justice—not enablers of global violence.

We remain committed to representing your views and advocating for a university that prioritises ethical and socially responsible investment.”
