Today on Trans Day of Visibility (March 31st), we would like to express our unwavering support and solidarity with trans and non-binary people around the world, and particularly towards those members of the University of Glasgow community. Today is a day to honour and celebrate the existence of trans people, and to amplify the continued fight for trans rights in Scotland and beyond.

The UK Government’s recent blocking of the Gender Recognition Reform Bill, and the particular focus on trans rights throughout the SNP leadership debate, have sparked a wave of transphobia, misinformation, and hate speech towards trans and non-binary people in Scotland. These unjust attacks on the existence and experiences of trans people in this country are an affront to the human rights that they undermine, and we condemn any rhetoric or action that seeks to deny trans people their right to self-determination, safety, and space within our communities.

We recognise that these recent debates are just one example of the many obstacles that trans individuals face every day. We must recognise and challenge the disproportionate levels of discrimination, marginalisation, and violence that trans people face, and instead work towards building a community that uplifts and celebrates the strength, diversity, and resilience of trans and non-binary people.

Here at the Glasgow University Students’ Representative Council, we believe that every student, and indeed every person, deserves to feel safe, valued, and respected. We are committed to working towards a future where trans people can thrive without fear of discrimination.
