This is your chance to make amazing memories, meet tons of new people (from Glasgow and beyond!), and play a key role in welcoming new students!
Please note: you must be a registered University of Glasgow student up to and including Welcome Week, so at least until Friday 20th September 2024, to be considered for application.
What You'll Do:
- Be a friendly face for new students, helping them navigate their first week at the UofG.
- Assist with fun events like:
- Our two-day Welcome Fair, giving students the opportunity to join our 300+ clubs and societies.
- Social Events, such as our headphone discos, movie nights, ceilidhs, and club & society taster sessions.
- Campus Tours, helping students familiarise themselves with the University.
- Wellbeing Events, including tips on looking after yourself during your studies.
- Postgraduate Events, including our famous drag night, comedy show, pub quiz and more.
- Information sessions, on student life and services available.
- No experience required, and we provide training for all events!

We Are Looking For:
- Volunteers who are confident, enthusiastic, approachable, and friendly.
- You may on occasion be confronted by emotional and distressing situations, and must be able to handle these with care and empathy. You will be provided training on signposting students to appropriate wellbeing services.
What We Offer:
- Training: a full induction and training sessions will be delivered to you the week prior to Welcome Week, to ensure that you are equipped with the necessary skills and information required to carry out your role.
- Unforgettable Week: Make lifelong friendships with other Welcome Helpers, create amazing memories, and enjoy a packed week of fun events.
- Develop New Skills: Learn valuable teamwork, communication, and event management skills.
- Boost Your CV: Get "Welcome Helping" listed on your official HEAR transcript (great for future applications!)
- Be Part of the Community: Play a vital role in making new students feel welcome at Glasgow.
Time Commitment:
- Welcome Helping runs from Monday, Sept 9th to Friday, Sept 20th.
- Training and team building are from Sept 9th-12th.
- Welcome Week events run from Sept 13th-20th. Most events are during the day (8am-5pm), with a few early evenings (5pm-10pm).
- We'll work with your availability when creating the schedule. Ideally you will be available to help out a few ours each day, however, we still encourage you to apply even if you have partial availability!

Welcome Fair
Help hundreds of students find their perfect club!
Be the first point of contact for new students as they arrive at our vibrant Welcome Fair. After helping us set up the fair, you'll help guide new students through the fair, answer their questions, and help them connect with clubs and societies that match their interests. Bonus: Learn about all the amazing clubs and societies UofG has to offer while you're at it!
Social Events
Make Welcome Week unforgettable with fun social events!
Get involved in setting up exciting activities like headphone discos and movie nights. Create a welcoming atmosphere for new students, chat with them, and help run the activities. Bonus: These events are a great way to meet new people and make lasting friendships.
Campus Tours
Become a campus expert and guide new students!
Receive training to lead informative walking tours of the university. Help new students feel comfortable in their surroundings, answer their questions, and show them hidden gems on campus. Bonus: Learn interesting facts about the university along the way.
Wellbeing Events
Promote inclusivity and make everyone feel welcome!
Assist with events designed for specific student groups, like disabled students or students of colour. Help them feel valued and supported, and contribute to a diverse and welcoming environment for all. Bonus: Develop your communication and interpersonal skills while making a positive impact.
Postgraduate Events
Welcome new postgraduate students and show them a good time!
Help set up exciting evening events for postgraduate students, like drag shows or pub quizzes. Create a welcoming atmosphere and ensure everyone has a fun experience. Bonus: Network with postgraduate students from various fields and get a taste of postgraduate life at Glasgow.
Information Sessions
Empower new students with essential information!
Assist with sessions that help students navigate university life, such as our Intro to Student Media or Welcome to Scotland Social. Answer their questions and be a source of support during their transition. Bonus: Gain valuable experience in public speaking and information delivery.
