About
We are the Glasgow University Amnesty International Society.
Glasgow University Amnesty International Society is a branch of Amnesty International, a global NGO that fights for the protection of human rights across the world. As a student-run society, we collaborate with the wider student community, and other activism societies, to raise awareness on campus about current human rights issues, through campaign and fundraising events.
We usually meet on Tuesdays in Glasgow University Union, 5-6 pm, to discuss human rights issues during campaign events and with guest speakers. While we do cover some very serious topics, we make sure we have a lot of fun along the way. Socials form a big part of our society and we host a variety of drinking and non-drinking events throughout the academic year, such as pub quizzes, boardgame socials, Amnestea and sub crawls.
We are proud to have raised £1106.48 in 2023/24 to help protect human rights around the world. This last year, our interactive events explores human right issues around the world through three main campaigns: Reproductive Rights, The Nothern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act 2023, and the Israel-Palestine conflict, as well as our annual Write for Rights campaign. We were honoured to host guest speaker, Gráinne Teggart, Deputy Director of Amnesty Northern Ireland, collaborate with GU Celebrate Palestine and GU Unicef, and produce our own presentations and letter-writing templates on these topics.
Our 12-person committee is elected at our AGM in April, and any vacant postions are elected at EGMs throughout the year. We strive to be the most welcoming, friendly, and inclusive society we can be, and are always excited to welcome new faces!
We are looking forward to meeting you in September 2024!
