For this to work, we need you to help encourage your lecturers to record their lectures in one of the teaching spaces with lecture recording capability (a number which has increased 30% over summer 2017). There is a list of teaching spaces with lecture recording capability at the bottom of the page.
FAQ
What are the benefits on lecture recording/ why is the SRC pushing for lecture recording?
There are a multitude of benefits of recording lectures for students. It is a vital support mechanism for a number of students, for example: student parents who have childcare responsibilities, students with disabilities or those whose first language isn’t English. Academically, this would provide vital exam support for students and provide huge stress relief around these times. This is really beneficial for those odd days when you’re sick or the bus breaks down, and you miss a lecture, it can take the worry out of catching up. These reasons are why the SRC are working with the uni as this would benefit ALL students at the University of Glasgow.
How do I encourage my lecturers to record their lectures?
The best way to encourage your lecturers to do this is raising the issue at your Staff Student Liaison Committee Meeting (SSLC) which your class representative will go to. Ask your class rep to relay the message on your behalf; showing staff the constructive reasons behind why you want lecture recording is key. You could also email your lecturer, or your course convener highlighting these reasons directly.
What is the university’s current policy on lecture recording?
The university currently runs an ‘opt-out’ lecture recording policy, which means your lecturer currently has to choose not to record their lectures. This means it is at the discretion of individual lecturers. This is why your encouragement is key in order to get lecturers to record their classes!
The full lecture recording policy is available here: University of Glasgow Lecture Recording Policy
Why aren’t all staff recording lectures?
Staff are hesitant to record lectures for a number of reasons. There are a number of issues due to the performance rights of the lecturer in video recording and copyright, but we are pushing more for audio recording. There are other issues relating to the discussion of sensitive material which are particularly prevalent in certain subjects like medicine, for example. Due to the fact we have an opt- in policy, we have to show staff why lecture recording is vital. By showing the positive aspects of lecture recording hopefully these issues can be overcome in time.
So get involved and let’s get lecture recording used as widely as possible on campus! If you need to get in touch or have any questions or feedback on the campaign please contact VP Education Grigoris Kokinidis at vp-education@src.gla.ac.uk #UofG #lecrec
