Duncan Calvert (he/him)

Hello! My name is Duncan Calvert, I’m in my 5th year studying Portuguese and Spanish and I’m running to be President of the SRC!
Studying at the University of Glasgow has been a life-changing experience, and I’m running in order to give back to this amazing community. As a home student and student carer, I recognise the challenges we face as students, and I am committed to the vital work of the SRC and everything effective student representation can achieve.
Through previous positions, I have the experience, professional relationships, and knowledge needed to champion progress on campus. If elected, I will do my utmost to further improve the student experience so that the University remains committed to its most important asset: us, the students.
My experience
- School of Modern Languages and Cultures Representative
- SRC’s Assessor on Court
- CIVIS Council Member
- Welfare Officer - GUPSS
- Team Leader Welcome Week 2024 - Best Moustache Winner
My Priorities
- I have used my position as Assessor on Court to lobby Court to divest from arms and move towards an ethical investment policy in line with students’ values. I will use the means available to the SRC to continue to apply pressure on this issue. The University should be investing in a brighter future, not in corporations that cause human suffering.
- Expand support for Widening Participation students at UofG by challenging classism culture on campus via an SRC campaign and by continuing to tackle financial barriers to education.
- The policies which affect the student experience do not come exclusively from university management. I will use my voice to lobby Glasgow City Council and Holyrood to address the Student Housing Crisis as well as inadequate funding for Scottish universities via participation in the Save our Scottish Unis campaign.
- Encouraging students to interact with the SRC via the institution of an annual multi-campus Priorities Survey. This would ask students some of the issues they want to see the SRC focus on for the year ahead and serve as a means to hold the Executive accountable.
- Collaborating with the University to improve support for students who have been impacted by global conflict and be a partner in UofG’s discussions surrounding the rebuilding of the higher education sector in Gaza.
- The University needs to be held accountable for how it deals with cases of Gender-Based Violence - I support the University pledging to the EmilyTest charter.
- Working towards a comprehensive Good Cause reform that clearly covers cases of GBV and reproductive health.
- Working with schools and colleges to implement more successful Student Experience internships which encourage communication between staff and students and empower students with transferable skills that enhance their education.
- Supporting student activists by developing a Student Activism Guide. This will bolster our community’s commitment to social justice by providing students with advice on effective campaigning, rights and responsibilities as activists, and information on UK protest laws.
A vote for me is a vote for a better student experience. Vote Duncan #1 on March 5th and 6th! #yeswedunCAN
Hamza Ramzan

Dear Team UofG,
My name is Hamza, and it is my great honour to be running for the SRC Presidency. As someone who has been involved in all facets of student life – from sports clubs to academic societies and the occasional appearance in the debating chamber – I believe I am well suited to taking up the office of the SRC Presidency.
I believe that the role of the SRC is not just to represent students but to empower, inspire, and prepare them for a world that is rapidly evolving. If elected to serve, I pledge to work with you all to make campus a great place of learning and discovery, transforming the University of Glasgow into an institution that produces more than just students.
A modern approach to learning –
- Personalised Academic Mentorship: ensure that the university provides students with access to the resources and guidance they need to thrive, including improvements to the current mental health support.
- Establish an Entrepreneurship Incubator at the SRC: provide support for students who wish to develop innovative solutions to the problems that the future presents.
- Integrating technologies to enhance learning: collaborate with the university’s research and technology faculties to give students the confidence to be able to work with new and emerging technologies.
Gearing students towards an impactful career –
- Bridging the theory with practice: I will work closely with the College Employability Programme and Student Jobs to connect students with relevant opportunities both locally and abroad.
- Partnerships with industry professionals: increase the universities collaboration with companies, startups and organisations providing a host of networking and mentorship opportunities.
- Global opportunities: promote students to engage in overseas programmes and contribute towards the educational development of less-educated countries.
Advocate for a sustainable and transparent campus –
- Conflict Support Scheme: work towards establishing a scheme where those affected by war have an opportunity to complete their higher education in UofG.
- Meet with all societies at the start of the year to establish areas and agreements in which we can further progress their objectives: resolving spacing issues on campus.
- Promote sustainable development at the university: particularly through assessing ways in which the university receives funding and utilises investment.
- Advocate for inclusion: ensure the demands and welfare of minorities are being heard and improved alongside increasing the range of non-alcoholic events at university.
Above are some ideas that I am passionate to bring about if elected to serve as your President. Additionally, I would host regular drop-in sessions to hear the concerns of students on campus and work tirelessly to support them and be a strong voice where I can. Ultimately, I see this role as an opportunity to serve and improve an institution which I have been grateful to be a part of and that I hope to see grow into a beacon of light globally.
Feel free to reach out with any questions, and any support would be greatly appreciated.
Vote Hamza as your next President!
