Katie Fish
Hey, I’m Katie and I’m running for VP Student Activities! The social aspect of university has been the highlight of my degree and I’d love to help ensure that’s true for everyone else.
Experience
- I’ve been an SRC freshers helper for the last three years, meaning I know the week really well! My experience as a freshers helper has been incredibly positive and provides me with a good understanding of running freshers week events; in person (2019), online (2020), and blended (2021).
- School of Chemistry Representative 2020/21, I was voted best student representative for my work advocating for students’ best interests and making my coursemates feel heard. I also organised and hosted a college-wide Kahoot pub quiz with over 100 participants.
- Co-founder and president of Taylor Swift Society, the largest growing society in the university this year with almost 600 members. I also co-run our Instagram, growing it to a following of 1000+ in just 3½ months.
Fresher’s Week
- Being an SRC freshers helper the last 3 years, including team leader this year, puts me in a good position to be able to organise an inclusive, fun, and effective freshers week.
- I’d like to continue the well-loved events from previous years such as headphone disco, campus tours, and the international ceilidh as well as increase the number of collaborations with other societies this year.
- I also plan to look into reinstating the SRC run night-buses; to ensure students get home safe during freshers week with help from our trained freshers helpers.
Throughout the Year
- Create a home student officer position on student council to ensure home students are properly represented and work to make them more involved in the student lifestyle.
- Increase support for new societies by making the process of establishing a society more understandable and transparent. Develop resources for societies providing advice on how to plan certain events, deal with common issues, etc.
- Make it mandatory for all affiliated societies to have a welfare officer who has undergone SRC provided Suicide and Sexual Violence prevention training, as well as look into creating a model ‘disciplinary procedure’ for clubs to adopt.
- Promote the use of Macintyre building rooms (Williams room and 201) as social spaces to societies to make the SRC building a more ‘happening’ place.
- Create a “clubsandsocs” social media page to promote societies, with society takeovers and weekly ‘what’s on’ event announcements.
- Encourage societies to advertise their events on our website, making glasgowunisrc.org a reliable place for students to find events going on throughout the year.
- Push for SRC ambassadors HEAR transcript recognition to be reinstated.
Things I’d love to do
- Work with and build upon the work of previous council members to create an ‘international students fair/week’ celebrating the different cultures which make up our university.
- Start a podcast interviewing staff, council members and societies in short episodes to provide insight into the behind-the-scenes running of the university to students.
Thank you for reading my manifesto!
