Duncan Calvert

Hi! I’m Duncan (he/him) and I’m running to be the SMLC Representative on your SRC. Having been with the SMLC for four years and Class Rep twice, I have experience in effective student-staff communication and insight into School and University structures. During this time studying languages, I have had ideas on how we can minimise stress during Year Abroad planning, improve student life, and better represent SMLC in the wider university community:

  1. Work to implement a time-tabled session for each language group in 2nd Year, in which all relevant information pertaining to the Year Abroad can be shared. Zoom sessions fail to reach all students during the GoAbroad process.
  2. Expand Good Cause to the Junior Honours Term Abroad. The Term Abroad is an amazing opportunity, but financial or health-based exemptions should be more easily available given the cost-of-living crisis and the impact it is having on students.
  3. Using the currently vacant position to be represent SMLC Class Reps on both school and university-level issues.

We need representation that can communicate with staff while remaining committed to the interests of students. With your support, I can be the voice the SMLC needs on the SRC.
