Hailie Pentleton-Owens
Hey! I’m Hailie (she/her) and I’m running to be your SRC President!
I am a current SRC Sabbatical officer, and I have 3 years of experience on the SRC Council. As the VP Student Support, I have followed through on my previous manifesto promises to the student body. I have:
- Created two new roles on SRC Council through the development of the Widening Participation Officers;
- Worked to address student accommodation issues through my work on the Cap Student Numbers Campaign;
- Hosted events for disabled and neurodivergent students;
- And pushed through student welfare improvements in learning and teaching by making the university start a review of the Good Cause process and by participating in the consultation on the Accessible and Inclusive Learning Policy.
I’ve also worked with council members to push forward several ongoing projects, including the development of anti-racism workshops, relocation of the student networks to better platforms, and provision of free period products.
My Experience:
I have a wide range of lived experience as a student—as a disabled and neurodivergent student, a student carer, and a widening participation student. As a result, I know how important it is that the University prioritises supporting all student groups, and I want to make sure that this happens!
My experience includes:
- 1 Year as SRC VP Student Support
- 2 Years as SRC Disability Officer
- Editor-in-Chief of The Glasgow Guardian (21/22)
- Co-founder of the Taylor Swift Society
If elected, I will:
- Address the cost-of-living crisis on students by pushing for low-cost food options on campus and increased university spending on student financial support;
- Extend the library café opening hours to the weekends so students have access to hot food outside of teaching hours;
- Continue to bring the issue of student accommodation to the University and to Glasgow City Council to advocate for safe and affordable living spaces for all students;
- Use my experience on council and as a sabbatical officer to support the incoming VPs and council members;
- Review and improve the training for council members to better prepare them to represent students;
- Support the next VP Student Support with continuation of my work on anti-racism workshops;
- In light of the Morag Ross Report, support the implementation of better support for students experiencing Gender Based Violence;
- Make the University follow through on their promise to reform the Good Cause process to help students in crisis rather than hinder them;
- And continue to push the University to support its students from all backgrounds, across all colleges, and at every levels of study.
I care deeply about the experience of students and understand how important it is that the University makes students feel supported and cared for throughout their University experience. I’ve spent the last year working towards reforming student support systems and if you vote for me, I’d be honoured to spend the next year working on improving systems across every part of the University for you!
Thank you for reading,
Hailie <3
