Mariama Bah
Hi, my name is Mariama, and I would love to be your next VP Student Activities. I am fun, bubbly, and easy to talk to. I would love it if you voted for me because I think that I can bring a unique experience to the role, as an arts student and someone who has been heavily involved in theatre since I was little, I really enjoy meeting new people and creating fun memories and I'd love to be able to, as VPSA, help you do the same!!!!!
Experience
- I was a SRC Freshers helper in 2022 which was a fantastic and positive experience which helped me learn more about what new and returning students need when starting the academic year.
- I am currently the SRC Critical Studies School Rep where I have been working closely with class reps and staff to better improve student experience and ensure any issues are addressed and sitting on council has made be able to do that.
Welcome Week
- My experience as a fresher’s helper this year has equipped me to know what sort of events students enjoy and I'd love to continue with past popular events such as the international ceilidh, silent disco, and outdoor cinema.
- I would love to also host more fun sober day and evening events for those that maybe don’t want to drink or need a little rest throughout their fun week but still have an opportunity to meet new people!
- Make sure that all dietary requirements are met for students, making it clear that halal, vegan and gluten free options are available and communicating that to students (This will be done throughout the year too!!!)
Throughout the year
- I want to better improve space around campus for Clubs and Societies to use, maybe even hiring space outside of campus but is still nearby for clubs and Socs.
- Run more fun and free sober events for those that are not into drinking or those that have a 9am class the next day.
- Collaborate more with other student unions. I particularly want to do this by having fun silly competitions with each other for example holding a mini masked singer event, which union wears the silliest costumes for a week, board game competition and playground matches. This will also get a chance for us to raise money for SRC Raising and Giving Committee and any other charities of the other unions choosing.
Cute ideas I really want to do!!!
- I would love to have a weekly afternoon tea session where students get a chance to have a break from their screens and just gossip a little with others, do some drawing, colour in. Anything to give students a break for a little while.
- Also working with societies to have different taster sessions on throughout the year for students that maybe didn’t get to try at the start of the semester. This provides students with opportunities to try out new things.
For a fun and wholesome wee time, Vote Mariama ??
Theo Frater
Hi there, I’m Theo and I want to be your next Vice President of Student Activities!
One of the most important aspects of University life is a common social life between students. It’s my goal to create that. Here’s what I bring to the table;
Experience
- As an SRC council member and the current SRC Court Assessor, I have gained an extensive insight into student representation, participated in organising events such as Home Students’ Day, and represented students at Court, the highest governing body of the University. I’ve also had the opportunity to meet and work alongside the University’s senior management and am confident that I can hit the ground running;
- As President of the newly-formed Home Students’ Society I have been in a great position to understand issues facing clubs and societies and come up with ideas to improve these;
- As a former Welcome Helper (awarded best dressed!), I have an insight into what goes into making Freshers’ Week run smoothly;
- Finally, as someone who gets involved across campus in the various unions and clubs I have a good outside view of things not just within the SRC.
Freshers’ Week Vision
- Your introduction to University is pivotal and it can make or break your University experience (just ask anyone from my cohort).
- Building on the successes of previous years, I will run a Freshers’ week which truly exhibits University life, and effectively welcomes students to Glasgow and to Scotland;
- I will work alongside the four unions to create a more joined-up and inclusive Freshers’ week;
Clubs and Societies Vision
- Clubs and Societies are extremely important to creating a common life among students.
- Make getting a society off the ground as easy as possible;
- Create a ‘plug and play’ model constitution that new societies can adopt and use right off the bat;
- Cut down on bureaucracy such as the mandatory membership portal;
- Provide greater support to clubs and societies in all areas and encourage the University to do the same;
- Update and expand the clubs and societies handbook.
On the SRC I’d like to…
- Create more opportunities for students to get involved in the SRC without being on council;
- Work closely together with the four unions to help clubs and societies;
- Increase engagement with students and visibility of the representative work the SRC does;
- While looking forward, be more in touch with SRC alumni and traditions;
- Explore reinstating former SRC services such as nightly halls minibuses where possible.
In general I’d like to…
- Keep pushing the University to cap numbers and recognise the impact inflated numbers have had on our campus;
- Work with the University and others to address cost of living issues;
- Help under represented groups like home students get involved in on campus life;
- Work closely with the VP Student Support and Welfare Officers to organise welfare activities for various groups on campus;
- Work cross campus to promote University life.
Thanks for reading my manifesto and remember to vote Theo for #1 VPSA!
- Theo
