Tony Anderson (he/him)
Hello, I’m Tony (He/Him) and I’m running to become your next SRC President.
I’m a current sabbatical officer and this is my third year on council, having served as your Mental Health Officer in 2022 and as First Year Representative the previous academic year. As the VP Student Support, I have kept all my promises to the student population. I have:
- Continued to work with Mature Students Association by raising the concerns of accessibility at a university committee.
- Ensured that Mental Health support is extended by supporting the business case of an NHS Partnership.
- Worked with the University on accommodation spaces and support available for students in them by supporting a business case which will see continued and specialised support for those in university accommodation.
- Continued to support the work on Gender Based Violence by being involved in the Together Against GBV campaign and planning several events for the 16 Days of Activism.
- Worked with the other student bodies on welfare issues and work collectively for the benefit of students by using the Welfare Forum as a place where collaborative work can take place.
I’ve also worked with council members and societies to make sure that we celebrate and recognise significant occasions throughout the year such as Black History Month, 16 Days of Activism, Trans Day of Remembrance and currently LGBTQ+ History Month.
If I am elected as the next SRC President I promise I will:
- Continue to address the cost-of-living crisis on students.
- Continue to oppose the university’s investment in arms.
- Evaluate the impact on the Cap Student Numbers campaign and if required, bring this campaign back.
- Continue to work with the university on a harm reduction approach and move away from their zero-tolerance approach to drugs.
- Seek advice and guidance on the addition of a new Sabbatical Officer.
- Make it clearer to the student body, staff, and candidates the expectations and roles of each representative on council.
- Use my skills and experience to help and support the Vice Presidents and council.
As a student who is disabled and neurodivergent, care experienced, mature and a part of the LGBTQ+ community I have used my lived experience to outline my work and I know the importance of prioritising support for all student groups especially from those who come from a non-traditional student group, and I will continue to push the university to support the entire student body.
A vote for me is not only a vote for ambitious and achievable plans it is a sign to the university that the students will no longer accept substandard education, underfunded and understaffed support services, and a lack of affordability on campus.
This election vote for the person with the proven record of supporting students, vote for Tony.
House of Dragons (they/them)
Hey, we’re House of Dragons and we believe in the power of community and mutual aid. Since coming to Glasgow we have experienced nothing but love and support and tones of absolutely wonderful people! However, UofG Students have been repetitively sacrificed by senior management in exchange for higher profits and this has to change NOW. Together we can change this and we are determined to stand up for the needs and wellbeing of every current and future student at this university. Our journey to UofG has been challenging and unfortunately, it still is. Being a trans, queer, neurodiverse, disabled student with mental health struggles is not easy. Yet, we’re not alone and so many of you have your challenges and difficulties. However, we know together as a community we can create a much better space, one which we will be really proud of and one which will not only support but empower all. So it is time to vote for Dragons and slay!
If we get elected, we will:
- Wholeheartedly support all demands of the student occupation addressing divestment, reparations & decolonisation, and vow to fight for their implementation.
- In light of the serious mismanagement of the University of Glasgow, stand up to Senior Management and demand structural change to the university to ensure students' benefit and wellbeing is placed above profits.
- Create a Community Mental Health Walk-In Centre where instant psychological consultations will be available (according to EUCOMS guidelines).
- Develop a scheme creating wheelchair-accessible accommodation right on campus available for the full length of studies for disabled students called “Housing
DisAbled”.
- Address Gender-Based Violence on campus, especially in well-known places that brushed such serious issues beneath the carpet.
- With the university GP service, develop a scheme to support students in need experiencing long waiting times to essential healthcare (particularly through bridging prescriptions).
Pablo Morán Ruiz (he/him)
Hello there! I’m Pablo (he/him), a 4th year Biomedical Engineering student, and I am running to be your future SRC president!
If elected, I intend, first and foremost, to have student voice and concerns amplified and taken seriously by the University. Through previous experiences, such as having been an SRC council member for two consecutive years, sitting on the Student Voice and Quality Framework Working Group and University Court amongst others, I have the necessary knowledge and drive to evoke change. On top of that, I am President of the Spanish Society on campus and part of the RAG committee, as well as having been actively engaged in student matters throughout my time in University.
Aiming to represent students and uphold their voice, I will:
- Ensure the Cap Student Numbers Campaign demands are followed through, with an active advocacy on increasing funding for student services to secure improvements of the student experience.
- Urge the University to take an intersectional approach against GBV that includes and gives visibility to underrepresented and vulnerable groups, ensuring that their needs and views are being heard and taken into account at the University level.
- Pressure the University to put effort towards their commitment to the 15 by 30 Pledge, ensuring that 15% of refugees are enrolled in higher education by 2030, whilst advocating for furthering of the work as a University of Sanctuary through increased Sanctuary Scholarship numbers and refugee support.
- Reform the Good Cause process to address reproductive and sexual health circumstances appropriately and confidentially, defending a supportive environment for students and establishing universal guidelines and resources that address the current GBV crisis and empower students to navigate reproductive rights and sexual health without fear of judgment or discrimination.
- Address the University’s sustainability goals, ensuring measurable outcomes for a greener campus while being consistent by making the SRC comply to such standards.
- Continue the work on decolonising the curriculum and upholding an anti-racism stance on campus, promoting diversity, equality, and inclusion in education.
- Lobby the Students’ Representative Council and the University to effectively divest from arm companies, upholding principles of peace, human rights, and well-being of global communities.
- Defending a working housing system for students through measures such as making clear the number of students eligible for and the presence of the Rent Guarantor Scheme and securing the presence of support in newly acquired PBSAs by the University.
- Work on establishing an interdisciplinary conscientious objection policy for students to abstain on moral grounds from working on assessments involving aspects such as animal testing or military-involved companies and having an alternative to fulfill such assessments.
- Support a greater cohesion across campuses through an enhanced SRC presence on the Dumfries, Hainan, and Chengdu campuses to improve the student experience while upholding its representation.
University should work under a system where students are centred as the main priority, with student input being regarded highly, and support being granted to enhance the student experience.
This election, Vote Pablo for Pres!
